DEPARTMENT: Initiatives
LOCATION: Washington, DC
REPORTS TO: Executive Vice President, Initiatives
FLSA CLASSIFICATION: Exempt
POSITION STATUS: Full-Time
DATE OF REVISION: March, 2008
BASIC FUNCTION:
In 2005, the Urban Land Institute launched an Infrastructure
Initiative in response to a shared belief that decision making for
infrastructure was flawed. ULI’s body of work to date
includes forums on the state of infrastructure, infrastructure
financing, and the impact of population growth and infrastructure; the
Infrastructure 2007: A Global Perspective report; panel discussions
across ULI district councils; and staff participation in panels and
speeches across the country. All have underscored the need to
inject new metrics in infrastructure decision making that encourage
density, smart growth and sustainability and that reconnect
infrastructure to land use, housing affordability and the built
environment.
As a key element of this effort, information is gathered, distilled
and disseminated to our members, policy makers, and the public.
The Senior Associate works within the Initiatives Group, with other
staff, ULI Product and District Councils and members to identify trends,
cutting edge issues, and obstacles to accomplishing improved
metropolitan planning and development. One of the great strengths of ULI

which can be applied in a variety of business and decision making
efforts. The goal of ULI is to move beyond the creation of passive
materials and to effect change within the built environment.

metrics which communities can use to better evaluate infrastructure
projects on a broader community design and sustainability
continuum.
-

assist them in developing locally improved infrastructure agendas and
plans. The goal would be to assist communities in developing
strategies which better integrate infrastructure with housing and
sustainability. A balance between repair and maintenance of
existing infrastructure with needs for new projects and metropolitan
growth would be considered. Regional strategies and implementation
of ideas developed in visioning sessions and the exercise of
ULI’s Reality Check efforts would be favored.

District Councils to assist others in implementing strategic
infrastructure goals and objectives.
