Photographs and other artwork must be submitted with manuscripts. If
submitting artwork with the manuscript is not possible, the author
should indicate in writing the type and amount of additional graphics
material to be supplied, reference points in the manuscript (if needed),
and/or potential sources for graphics. High-quality illustrative
materials, including site plans, photographs, and renderings are
expected.
Photographs
Hard copies: Original color transparencies (4”
x 5”) or slides are preferred, but color prints (5” x
7” or 8” x 10” glossy, professionally shot
photographs) are acceptable; snapshots are not acceptable. The surface
of the print should have no marks or scratches. Never write directly on
the back of a photograph: the impression of the pen or pencil may show
through on the front of the print, or the ink may rub off on the surface
of prints stacked on top of each other.
Electronic files: TIFs, JPEGs, EPS, high-resolution
PDFs, and most other image formats are acceptable; RGB or CMYK;
high-resolution (300 pixels per inch); dimensions at least 4 x 6
inches if not larger. (NOT acceptable: An image placed in a Word
document or other text document; graphic files in PowerPoint documents;
lo-resolution images pulled off the internet.) These files can be
transferred by email or saved to a CD or DVD.
Identify each photograph on a separate sheet with a suggested
caption, name of photographer, date of photograph if known, and source.
If photographs are not the property of the author, indicate that
permission has been obtained for their use, and supply the name and
address of the authorizing individual or organization.
Plans and Drawings
While it is possible for the art department to make revisions or
redraw plans and drawings, to the greatest extent possible, drawings and
plans should be in one of the following formats:
- line drawings, drawn primarily in black or another single dark
color.
- original drawings or photostats or glossy photographs of originals.
(Printed drawings, particularly those with tonal values, are difficult
for printers to work with. They must be rescreened, which often results
in moiré patterns.)
- digital files (see specs above for photographs).
Maps, plans, renderings and other drawings should be drawn for
reproduction at magazine scale. Large drawings are acceptable, but line
quality and lettering size must be reducible to 8" x 10" or smaller.
Large drawings should be sent unfolded in mailing tubes. All maps and
site plans should include scales, north arrows, and legends.
Graphs and Tables
Most graphs will be formatted and redrawn by the art department staff
to conform with Urban Land style. Submit clear originals or
photocopies with legible (typed or hand-printed) labels. Label all axes.
Numerical values for all data points must be provided. If possible,
provide graph copy (labels, numbers, etc.) as Microsoft Word. (See word processing guidelines for details.)
All tables will be edited and formatted to conform with Urban
Land style. Use Microsoft Word or Word Perfect. (See word processing
guidelines for details.)
If there are any questions, call or E-mail Betsy VanBuskirk, art
director (202-624-7036; bvanbuskirk@uli.org); Anne
Morgan, graphic designer (202-624-7037; amorgan@uli.org); or Byron Holly,
senior designer (202-624-7001; bholly@uli.org).
If possible, submit text on a high-density or double-density 3
1/2-inch diskette. We use WordPerfect 6.1 and Microsoft Word 7.0 but can
accept any version of WordPerfect or Microsoft Word. ASCII files also
are acceptable. If articles are submitted via E-mail, attach the file to
the E-mail message. Do not copy the text of the article into the
message. Doing so will cause formatting problems.
If possible, enter tabular data using Microsoft Excel. If not
available, use WordPerfect or Microsoft Word. (See
also graphics guidelines.)
