Case Studies for Action
| ULI publishes “Case Studies for Action” as a resource to
ULI District Councils in an effort to share information, outcomes of
district council activities, lessons learned, and aid them in their
outreach endeavors.
The case studies highlight ULI District Council activities at the
state, regional and local levels that seek to resolve complex land
use, development and redevelopment problems. These efforts
are typically innovative programs aimed at engaging land use
professionals and other stakeholders.

Reality Check on Growth—ULI Los Angeles
ULI Los Angeles, in partnership with the University of Southern
California (USC) Lusk Center for Real Estate, conducted a visioning
exercise in 2002 to raise awareness of the impending population increase
forecasted for the region. Close to 200 community leaders from the
public, private, and not-for-profit sectors gathered to try to envision
where to accommodate the Los Angeles region’s projected growth.
The outcome of the exercise was a series of growth models presenting
alternative visions for how Los Angeles might accommodate new
residents.

Smart
Growth Project Recognition Program—ULI Washington
Established in December 2000, the Smart Growth Alliance (SGA) is a
partnership formed to research, identify, and encourage land use
development and transportation polices and practices that support smart
growth in the Washington, D.C., region. As its first initiative, the SGA
developed the Smart Growth Project Recognition Program, which supports
good smart growth project proposals and provides political cover for the
public officials who support them. The SGA created a set of criteria to
determine whether a development project, as proposed, embodies the
principles of smart growth. Its success has led it to become a national
model for similar programs.
