ULI Florida Initiative on Regional Cooperation
ULI established the Florida Initiative on Regional Cooperation to
identify new opportunities for Florida to support and encourage
communities to collaborate regionally. At the forefront of the
initiative is a statewide committee composed of leaders from the
development community, civic and environmental groups, community-based
organizations, and the public sector.
The multiyear project was launched in December 2003 with a grant from
the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, as well as funding
from ULI and the four ULI Florida district councils.
The objectives of the ULI Florida Initiative are to:
- identify state barriers to regional cooperation;
- forge a consensus around effective state actions and reforms that
can help to facilitate regional solutions; and
- work to implement these actions and reforms.

The Florida Initiative held a symposium on March
17, 2006, in Miami. The symposium focused on developing state
strategies for regional cooperation and included a keynote address by
Governor Jeb Bush and participation by a group of top cabinet
members. Florida's district councils will now focus on
implementation of the Florida Initiative's key recommendations for
regional cooperation.

In June 2006, the Florida
Initiative, along with ULI and the ULI SE Florida/Caribbean District
Council, was recognized by the South Florida Regional Resource Center (SFRRC) at
its 3rd Annual Regional Excellence Awards Luncheon with the 2006
Regional Service Award. ULI Trustee and former District Council
Chair Tony Trella was on hand to receive the award, thanking the SFRRC
and its member organizations for saluting regionalism in all its efforts
throughout Florida.
