Economic Woes Temporarily Diminish Climate Change as a Factor in Real Estate Investment Decisions; Greater Interest Expected When Market Rallies: ULI Survey

The ongoing downturn in the commercial real estate industry has temporarily diminished the importance of climate change and alternative energy sources as a factor in real estate investment decisions, but interest is likely to pick up when the market rallies, according to a survey of U.S. financial industry leaders conducted by the Urban Land Institute (ULI). The survey also found that lenders tend to view energy efficiency -- rather than climate change -- as an important bottom-line issue, and are more apt to reshape their business strategies around reducing energy costs rather than reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Erik Sonden Is The New Chairman Of ULI France

The Urban Land Institute (ULI) is pleased to announce that Erik Sondén, up until now Head of Real Estate Coverage and Advisory at Société Générale , is the new Chairman of ULI France. In this voluntary leadership role, Sondén is replacing Lahlou Khélifi, Managing Director of STAM Europe, who served as District Council Chairman for two years.

GSA Faces Both Challenges And Opportunities For Leasing, Acquisition in the Current Economic Recession, ULI Tells Congress

The economic recession is presenting the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) with both challenges and opportunities in the leasing and development of office space, according to a representative for the Urban Land Institute (ULI).
ULI Senior Vice President Dean Schwanke recently testified on the potential for GSA leasing and building activity during a hearing held by the U.S. House of Representatives Subcommittee on Economic Development, Public Buildings, and Emergency Management. The subcommittee is part of the U.S. House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology Team Wins the 2009 ULI Gerald D. Hines Student Urban Design Competition

A plan drafted by a team from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology School of Architecture and Planning to redevelop a site within the Denver Design District (DDD) has been selected as the winning scheme in the seventh annual ULI (Urban Land Institute) Gerald D. Hines Student Urban Design Competition. The team’s entry was chosen by the competition jury over plans submitted by other finalist teams from Columbia University, Kansas State University, and the University of Miami.

Combined Housing and Transportation Costs Strain Workers Throughout Washington Metro Region, Finds New Report From Urban Land Institute

Housing located far from transit and employment centers places a heavy financial strain on working families in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan region, according to a new publication from the Urban Land Institute (ULI) Terwilliger Center for Workforce Housing. Beltway Burden: The Combined Cost of Housing and Transportation in the Greater Washington, DC Metropolitan Area, documents the challenges faced by area working families who are forced to "drive ‘till they qualify" for housing, incurring higher transportation costs that eventually erode their housing cost savings. It finds that area families are victim to combined housing and transportation costs that constitute, on average, nearly 47 percent of the area median income.

European investors, developers, bankers, and brokers confirm that 2009 will be “a very difficult” year according to the report Emerging Trends in Real Estate® Europe, 2009. Capital for real estate will continue to be in short supply during 2009, in both equity and debt markets. Indeed, the ratings for overall availability, on a scale of one to nine, are the lowest ever recorded by Emerging Trends in Real Estate® Europe and there is real uncertainty as to when this trend will reverse.

Alexander Otto Named Chairman of ULI Europe

Alexander Otto, CEO of ECE Projektmanagement, took over as Chairman of ULI Europe as of January 1, 2009. Otto, Chairman of ULI Germany for the last five years, sees his new task as above all to advance the international interests of the urban development and real estate sector: "The internationalization of the property sector offers enormous potential to learn from outstanding projects or companies in other countries. ULI Europe acts as a forum for the exchange of know-how on international level. And one of my core aims will be to promote this exchange, especially in the field of innovative environmental and sustainability concepts."
