Expansion, Leasing or Sale Options Could Generate Funds to Restore Architectural Landmark and Enhance Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library

Building one or two additional stories atop the District of Columbia’s Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library and making or part of the larger building available for lease could generate as much as $4 million to $5.5 million annually to offset the cost of critically needed repairs to the historic landmark, according to a ULI Advisory Services Panel of experts. Alternately, the sale of the building could generate at least $58 million for construction of a new central library.

The selection recognizes ULI’s 75 years of leadership in urban planning, land use, and development. Also, the award celebrates ULI’s dedication to building more sustainable communities that conserve land and energy worldwide. The Museum will present the award to ULI on March 15, 2012 at the Museum’s annual Honor Award gala.
