Fayetteville City Plan 2030: A Case Study
In 2004, the City Council of Fayetteville, AR, launched the process of developing the Fayetteville Vision 2020. This general plan set forth statements and values that the community, via their representatives, wanted Fayetteville to be in 2025. Recognizing the challenges the community faced to maintain character and livability while accommodating and benefiting from tremendous growth in the region, the city created a collaborative comprehensive planning program that resulted in unanimous approval of City Plan 2025, an award-winning comprehensive land use plan (American Planning Association state level award in 2006; Congress for the New Urbanism Charter Award for a Region and Metropolis Plan in 2007).
The land use maps and policies recommended in the City Plan provided a touchstone for city officials to balance tremendous growth within a livable, sustainable community, providing a comprehensive approach to planned and managed growth.
In July 2011, the City Council of Fayetteville again unanimously approved, City Plan 2030, an update of the previous document. City Plan 2030 further refines the goals and objectives outlined in City Plan 2025 and establishes action steps that will forward the its principles.
The ULI Rose Center for Public Leadership is pleased to present a case study review of this process. Please join us as local leaders provide context to the city’s approach to developing this comprehensive plan, review the principles at the heart of the process, and discuss the political and practical lessons learned by the endeavor.
