ULI Initiatives
The Urban Land Institute is undertaking a variety of initiatives aimed at addressing some of the most pressing issues facing the land use and real estate development industry. These initiatives take holistic approaches to such global issues as climate change, economic competitiveness, housing, and public/private partnerships.
Less-En
Less-En is the new ULI initiative to encourage better energy efficiency and retrofitting in non-domestic buildings – www.less-en.org . Less-En exists because the issue of energy consumption is largely abstract. We can’t easily spot the buildings that are wasting energy – or the ones that are performing well.

Climate Change, Land Use, and Energy (CLUE)
ULI will bring its organizational resources to the complex issues surrounding energy and climate change, acknowledging that the successful global reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions requires substantial investments in local communities. We believe ULI has the ability to foster new policies and solutions to address global climate change that are both feasible and effective at the nexus of land use, real estate, energy, and infrastructure. As an organization, we seek to move forward with new urgency by fostering leadership among ULI members and identifying the tools, techniques, and best practices needed to address difficult choices and tradeoffs, for which there are no precedents to measure decisions. We seek to empower individuals and organizations to solve one of the most important and complex long-term challenges ever faced by communities around the world, in a manner that meets the needs of the present, without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

City in 2050
The recent instability of global capital markets combined with newly emerging frameworks of environmental policy creates several imperatives for ULI. Real estate markets will be restructured and regulatory frameworks redefined. ULI’s mission calls us to forge ahead and proactively explore new land use paradigms and scenarios. This is a crucial time to help land use professionals innovate and explore new business strategies.

ULI Robert C. Larson Leadership Initiative
In 2009, ULI created the Senior Resident Fellowship in Leadership. The Larson Leadership Initiative will enable ULI to add leadership development activities to its program of work and extend the Institute’s reach to many more current and potential leaders.

London-New York Dialogue
In 2000 a team of academics and public policy-makers in London and New York produced a groundbreaking study of the economies of the two world cities. What stood out was the "striking parallels between the two cities," in terms of drivers of economic growth and the "problems of success" that both faced in managing that growth. Renewed focus on the London–New York axis has led the Urban Land Institute, in cooperation with New York University and London South Bank University, to revisit the topic with the original project team.

This work started with the 2008 review of the state of the cities by Greg Clark, a director of the original study, and will now focus on taking some of these topics forward, using analysis and solutions from experts in both cities.

ULI Urban Investment Network
Increasing investment in Europe’s cities is essential to being globally competitive in a knowledge led economy and reducing our carbon emissions decisively.  ULI Europe's Urban Investment Network has been formed to tackle these issues and promote a better long term dialgue between the public and private sectors.  The ULI Urban Investment Network seeks to bring together city government leaders, institutional investors and developers in a dynamic new partnership that is designed to increase the rate of investment in Europe’s cities through public/private collaboration and innovation.
