June 25, 2008 – Fairfax County Workforce Housing Summit: The Intersection of Traffic and Workforce Housing
Increasing transportation and housing costs, along with escalating traffic congestion, were issues highlighted at the Fairfax County Workforce Housing Summit on June 25, 2008. Fairfax County, in partnership with Freddie Mac and the ULI Terwilliger Center for Workforce Housing, invited corporate and community leaders, elected officials, and experts in the housing and transportation community to the Freddie Mac headquarters in McLean, Virginia.
Guest speakers highlighted the severity of increased congestion and soaring housing and transportation costs in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. Emphasis was placed on the need for affordable housing for working families that cannot afford to live close to their place of employment. The summit was another step taken to engage employers within the region to begin undertaking unified plans that harness the power of partnerships between government, private enterprise, and nonprofits.
Three concurrent panel discussions educated attendees on the connection between workforce housing and alleviating traffic congestion. Panelists proposed Transit Oriented Development (TOD) as one solution to decrease traffic congestion. Proactive planning was also suggested as a solution in areas such as Tyson’s Corner to create high density, mixed-use communities. J. Michael Pitchford, President and CEO of Community Development Preservation Corporation, and Chair of the Washington D.C. Terwilliger Center Steering Committee, moderated the “Housing Solutions to Ease the Commute’ panel and discussed the role of the Terwilliger Center in the closing remarks of the Summit.
