Why the Burnside Rocket Building?
Burnside Rocket is a mixed-use building located at the corner of East Burnside and NE Eleventh Avenue in central eastside Portland, Oregon. Formerly a vacant lot, the 15,500 square foot building is adjacent to an indoor rock climbing gym, frequent service bus lines, and bike routes. The four-story building includes a ground-floor pub, two floors of creative office space, a top floor restaurant, outdoor terraces on each level, and a rooftop garden. Construction was completed in April 2007 and the project was LEED Platinum certified in August 2008.
The Burnside Rocket has…
- Arcade balconies: Balconies over the sidewalk echo the historic character of E. Burnside, providing distinct public space.
- Local art: Operable window panels by emerging Portland artists provide an iconic design and protection from sunlight.
- Edible ecoroof: Provides a wide range of produce for the restaurant on site, as well as capturing stormwater on site.
- Underground aquifer: 300′ below the building, it is part of a geo-exchange HVAC system, and provides drinking water.
