In January 2011,
General Motors announced the closing of the GM Stamping Plant, a 2 million square foot industrial facility located west of downtown Indianapolis. While resulting loss of jobs is a disappointment to the residents and GM employees, the City sees this as an excellent opportunity to revitalize this well situated property. The property has over ¼ mile of frontage on the White River Parkway, excellent access from I-70 and only ½ mile from the new development emerging around the new Lucas Oil Stadium.
An Urban Land Institute Advisory Services panel consisting of experts in real estate development, preservation, urban planning, industrial regeneration, economic development and public policy will visit Indianapolis to provide strategic advice on a variety of land use and real estate issues. Led by former Indianapolis Mayor Bill Hudnut, this panel will spend a week reviewing, interviewing and framing recommendations for use by Develop Indy, the City’s Economic Development arm. Hudnut, currently Senior Fellow Emeritus at the Urban Land Institute will be joined by former Pittsburgh Mayor Tom Murphy. The panel is tasked with exploring the site’s market potential, suggesting development strategies, formulating planning and design ideas and framing implementation procedures to ensure that the site remains a productive part of the Indianapolis urban fabric.
