Vision North Texas is making an important contribution to the future quality of life, economic desirability and long-term sustainability of the 16-county North Central Texas region. It is increasing public awareness about important regional land use issues that affect mobility, air quality, water supply and other economic and environmental resources. In addition, it is serving as a forum for discussion, education, research and decision about public and private sector actions to address these concerns. Vision North Texas is a partnership of the private, public, non-profit and academic sectors, headed by Charter Sponsors, ULI North Texas, the North Central Texas Council of Governments, and the University of Texas at Arlington.
The first phase of Vision North Texas began in the summer of 2004. The primary activity during the first phase of Vision North Texas was a major regional visioning workshop that was held on April 25, 2005, at the University of Texas at Arlington. Approximately 200 representative community leaders – from businesses, neighborhoods, civic organizations, and governments - were invited to participate in an intense, interactive exercise in which 15 diverse, ten-person groups generated ideas to accommodate the region's anticipated growth. This was the area's first regional effort with such broad public involvement and with a focus on the wide range of issues related to regional growth and development. After the workshop occurred, the Vision North Texas project analyzed the concepts created at the workshop and used these results to carry out a wide-ranging campaign of public information and dialogue during the rest of 2005.
