Conference Chair’s Message

ULI Europe will bring together industry leaders from around the world to Milan for its annual trends conference 23 May 2006. At this unique event, leading developers, investors, advisers, and public officials will convene for an in-depth look at the art of place making.

This year’s conference will offer the chance to discover key trends, challenges, and opportunities faced by those who seek to create great urban environments. The agenda will include timely, substantive, and provocative discussions of such issues as:

  • The principles of place making—how to create liveable, authentic, and lasting urban centres.
  • The image and marketing of place.
  • The practicalities of place making.
  • The financial implications of place making—do well designed projects reap better financial rewards?
  • The conference will also feature the announcement of the 2006 ULI Awards for Excellence winners.

With numerous opportunities to interact and network, we are confident that this conference will provide you with the necessary tools to add value to your business. We hope you will join us in Milan in May.

Kind regards,
Manfredi Catella

Conference Overview

Great cities celebrate people, with walkable streets, welcoming public spaces and lively neighbourhoods. They thrive socially and economically because both public and private leadership understand the essence of place making. This conference will examine how great places are created—the art of shaping inviting, dynamic, and attractive cities. It will explore how to best leverage physical assets, people, and heritage to create cities that act as powerful magnets for people, jobs, and investment.

Discover the economic and social forces behind this trend; how specific projects are developed, and the innovative strategies used by the public and private sectors to fund and implement them. We will examine the best practices and lessons learned from recently completed projects and how they became catalysts for development and investment.

What You Will Learn

  • How to create project identity and a sense of place.
  • Methods of place making that stimulate regeneration.
  • Hands-on advice and case studies from experienced developers and investors.
  • The financial implications of place making.

Who Should Attend

Mixed-use property developers; master-planned community developers; shopping and entertainment center developers; local government officials and planners; transit officials and planners; redevelopment officials; architects and urban designers; smart growth and new urbanist advocates; apartment developers; office and hotel developers; REIT executives; real estate market and business consultants; investment bankers; commercial bankers; institutional investors and advisers; real estate brokers; and real estate lenders.

Albertini, since his election as Mayor in 1997, has spearheaded the rebirth of the city of Milan. His work has focused on the issues of improving infrastructure, mobility, safety, environment and social services within the city. Under his leadership, the development of the Fiera Milan, the city’s exhibition and trade fair complex was completed and Milan has become one of the major financial and business centres in Europe. The Principles of Place Making: How to Create Liveable, Authentic, and Lasting Urban Centres

The creation of city centres that feel authentic to the location—and that are viewed by the surrounding community as such—is a challenging task that involves the right mix of public and private uses, well-designed public spaces, appropriate architecture, suitable materials, and a host of other intangibles. What are the key factors that create project identity and a sense of place? What role do public spaces and civic uses play in creating authenticity and individuality? Using examples of best practices, these and other issues will be discussed in this provocative opening session.

1200 - 1315
The Image and Marketing of Place

How important is marketing, communications and brand creation in the real estate industry? Does good design speak for itself or do you need glossy advertisements and tempting incentives for financiers, investors, and the general public to sit up and take notice? In a world of increasing competition, clever marketing and communications could be the key to success. Learn the tricks of the trade from this panel of leading experts. Wally Olins of Saffron Brand Consultants will share his insights on and experiences in the branding and marketing of places, cities, and countries using examples of best practices from around the world. He will then lead a debate with fellow market experts and field questions from the audience on this key subject

With each award, the public becomes more keenly aware of the benefits of superior planning, design, and development, a goal of both the Institute and the development industry. Join us as we present the winners of the 2006 ULI Europe Awards for Excellence.

1515 - 1630
Lessons Learned - An Italian Development Tour
