William P. Kistler is the President of the Urban Land Institute (ULI) Europe, based in London. ULI Europe is a nonprofit education and research institute supported by more than 2,600 members representing all aspects of land use and development disciplines in Europe. ULI Europe is part of the Urban Land Institute, which has over 40,000 members worldwide. Its mission is to provide responsible leadership in the use of land to enhance the total environment.

ULI, considered the preeminent “think tank” in land use development, has an annual budget exceeding $30 million and a professional staff of more than 110 full-time employees, including research and education specialists, meeting planners, writers, publication experts, a marketing team and a professional office management group. The ULI Europe office, which opened in January 2004, runs the ULI Europe operations. Currently, there are more than 12 district councils in European countries, which serve as ULI Europe’s local organizations.

Prior to joining the staff of ULI, Mr. Kistler, a ULI trustee, served as managing director of Equinox Partners, a development advisory and executive search firm based in London. Mr. Kistler founded Equinox Partners in 1996, expanding the company to five offices in Europe and the United States. Over the past year, Equinox has conducted human capital surveys for ULI in both Europe and the United States to identify areas for improvement in drawing and retaining high-quality employees in the land use profession.

Prior to founding Equinox, Kistler, an architect, was with the Walt Disney Company from 1991 through 1995, first as the vice president and general director for the Disneyland Paris resort and residential development, then as vice president of new business development for the company’s operations throughout Europe. From 1989 through 1991, he was vice president of design and construction for JMB Properties Company in Chicago, where he created a new entity responsible for redevelopment, enhancement and capital investment programs at 180 office and retail properties throughout the United States. From 1988 through 1991, he also was vice president of corporate services for Cushman and Wakefield, Inc., in New York City, where he established a comprehensive corporate consulting group for the Northeast region that integrated brokerage, appraisal, development and other services.

Mr. Kistler served in several capacities at the IBM corporation from 1976 through 1988, including positions as corporate manager for the design and construction staff at Armonk, N.Y.; assistant to the president; manager of field real estate strategic planning; manager of the corporation’s European real estate operations; advisory architect to the corporate staff; and site architect for the general products division.

Mr. Kistler received a Bachelor of Science degree in architecture in 1976 from the University of Southern California, and is a graduate of IBM’s international executive program and advanced management institute. He is a founder and past chairman of Ecole Internationale de Marne la Vallee.
