ULI Trustee Profile
I am: Daryl J. Carter.
A ULI Member since: 1989.
I live in: Coto de Caza, California.
Favorite room in my home: Family room—has big, comfortable
sectional and a big-screen TV with surround sound and a play area for
Nathan, our nine-month-old son.
Favorite way to spend time with family: Watching on TV or attending a
sporting event. My wife Renee and I are major basketball, football, and
golf fans. Baby Nathan also enjoys sports, especially going to L.A.
Clipper games—we have season tickets.
How I unwind: Reading the paper first thing in the morning at
Starbucks, participating in sports—basketball, tennis, and
golf—playing scrabble with Renee, and playing with Nathan.
What makes me laugh: Seinfeld reruns, Nathan’s baby adventures,
basketball commentaries by Bill Walton and Charles Barkley, and the
tomfoolery of some of my friends.
What makes me angry: Racist and sexist attitudes and behaviors,
people lacking common sense, and rudeness.
Last book I’ve read: Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the
Leap . . . and Others Don’t.
Individuals I admire most: My parents, Nolan and Flossie
Carter—their sacrifices, ethics, motivation, and wisdom are the
foundations of my success.
The person I rely on most: My wife, Renee, my best friend, soul mate,
and confidante. In second place is my business partner for 11 years and
friend for 33 years, Quintin Primo.
First (salaried) job: Real estate associate at Continental Bank in
Chicago.
What I do now for a living: I am cochairman of Capri Capital, LP, a
diversified real estate investment firm with $6.5 billion in assets
under management. I cofounded Capri in 1992 with Quintin
Primo—Capri is a combination of our two last names.
Project I’m now working on: Numerous projects—probably
spending more time on two initiatives: our technology platform for asset
management and servicing, and our urban investment strategy in
California.
Area of my work that makes me proudest: Our lending and investment
activities in inner-city markets that traditionally have been
underserved by the real estate capital markets.
Why I would tell someone to join ULI: ULI is the premier organization
for real estate, promoting education, smart growth, and overall
professional quality. It provides a fantastic forum for
networking—both through the district councils and the product
councils. I am also proud of ULI’s focus on increasing diversity
in both the organization and the real estate profession.
