Four Mayors Named as Daniel Rose Fellows

In October 2009, the ULI Daniel Rose Center announced the appointment of the Mayors of Phoenix, Minneapolis, Nashville and Philadelphia (pictured above: left to right) as fellows to serve the Rose Center through 2010. Each mayor has chosen three members from their respective cities to form fellowship teams. Over the course of a year, each team, lead by the mayor, will work with experts in the real estate development, finance, and land use fields to tackle a specific land use issue facing the community.

ULI Rose Center Hosts Public Officials Track at ULI Fall Meeting
With the generous support of AMB Property Corporation, The ULI Daniel Rose Center sponsored scholarships for 113 public officials from 20 states to attend the Nov 3 – 6 ULI Fall Meeting in San Francisco. For the first time, the Fall Meeting program special sessions targeted for public officials, including two round table discussions: “Green Tools for Local Government” and “Lessons Learned from Partnering with Private Developers.” In addition, with partnership from WRT, the Rose Center hosted a reception to honor the contributions of public officials who advance responsible land use in their communities every day. The reception featured Shelley Poticha, Senior Advisor for Sustainable Housing and Communities at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). She reported on the Administration’s “unprecedented” commitment to building sustainable communities and urged all in attendance to support regional implementation of the principles adopted by the new HUD/DOT/EPA partnership. Looking around the room at over 150 public officials, Shelley noted, that even though the Rose Center is less than a year old, it is “already creating a place where the public and private sector can learn from each other.”
Daniel Rose Fellows Convene in San Francisco

Also at the ULI Fall Meeting, the Rose Center kicked off its annual Daniel Rose Fellowship, introducing the teams from Minneapolis, Phoenix, Philadelphia and Nashville. “We plan to make the most of this year, “said Rick Bernhardt, Executive Director of the Metro Planning Department in Nashville and one of Mayor Dean’s selected team members. “We want to tap the expertise of ULI and the experience of our colleagues in other cities about ways to revitalize several of our major transportation corridors.” The fellowships provide a year-long forum to help the four mayors and their teams address the most challenging land use issues facing their communities. Over the coming year, each city’s team will work with leading experts in the real estate development, finance, and land use fields with the intention of tackling complex land use issues facing each community. At the first meeting each team made a presentation about the context of planning and development in their region. The next meeting of the Daniel Rose Fellows will take place in Chicago in December 2009.
